Traditional research dissemination is passive, hampering its uptake outside specific silos within academia and limiting interaction with the stakeholder community. In this project, we aim to foster meaningful collaboration for the co-construction of knowledge around Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia, using the performing arts as an interactive knowledge mobilization format. Our project involves direct collaboration with the performing arts community in Montreal – including dancers, musicians, and circus performers – to explore novel ways of presenting scientific data from the micro to macro scale.
We have created Piece of Mind — an interdisciplinary team of PD/dementia community stakeholders, performing artists, and neuroscientists to create performance pieces that integrate recent scientific discoveries from the Montreal neuroscience community and lived experiences of those affected by these conditions. We expect this to improve knowledge exchange and empathy between the involved communities, promote discussion regarding neurodegenerative research and healthcare, and result in new partnerships within and beyond academia.
